Saturday, April 16 2016 by SNTV
  • Australia's swim team for Rio 2016 was named on Thursday, 14 April.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Kitty Chiller, Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Team:

"We have 10 current World Number one ranked swimmers and 26 swimmers in the top three. This is a very strong team and more importantly, it's a team that's going about things, that's process-driven, aiming to reach their peak performance personally in Rio and see what that brings."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Alicia Coutts, Australian Olympic Swimmer:

"I think we've come a long way since London in 2012 and you know, a lot of the young guys have come up and you know as you see, we've had some really good World Championship medals last year and it's definitely in good stead for Rio, but obviously being an Olympic year, have a lot of people come out and do amazing, spectacular things, and everybody wants that gold medal, so I know that everyone on the team is going to go in and do their best and give it everything they've got, and give that biggest crack that they've got and you know, whatever happens, happens, but I think everyone will be proud of the effort that they've put in."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Travis Mahoney, Australian Olympic Swimmer:

"It's being an unbelievable week and as Alicia said, the sense of comradery, I think from one meeting and talking to everyone , everyone seems to get on really well, and, swimming is, it's a special sport because it's an individual sport and you want to do the best yourself, but it's also a team sport. And it really feels like a family-type atmosphere and everyone want everyone to do their best and from my small experience I've had, it's been really enjoyable so far and I think that support is really important, if people have bad swims, you know that people are there for them, if they had good swims, they're there to celebrate with them. So, I think, yeah, it's definitely a special sport, individual and a team, you're competing as the Australian swim team."
