  • The West Indies beat titleholders Australia by eight wickets to win their first Women's ICC World T20 title in Kolkata, India on Sunday (3rd April).

    Underdogs the West Indies beat Australia by eight wickets to win their first women's ICC World Twenty20 title on Sunday (3rd April).

    West Indies openers teen Hayley Matthews and captain Stafanie Taylor the key women in their win: putting in a record partnership of 120 runs to meet a target of 149 - 9 more runs than the Windies had ever previously chased.

    Australia's 148 for the loss of five wickets saw Captain Meg Lanning and opener Elyse Villani strike 52 runs each.

    [ Lanning struck eight fours off 49 balls in her ninth half-century; Villani hit nine fours off 37 balls in her eighth half-century. ]

    In response the West Indies notched up runs with pacy abandon: reaching 50 in 6.4 overs and 100 in 13.3. It was the 15th over before Australia could nick a wicket - that of eighteen year old Hayley Matthews. Kristen Beams reaction telling us Australia's fight was still on.

    The Windies finished 149-2 after 19.3 overs: winning when an overthrow gifted the final two runs.

    The West Indies had never beaten Australia: their win at Eden Gardens denies the Aussies their fourth straight world title.
