Day explains matchplay tactics following WGC victory

  • Australia's Jason Day spoke after winning the WGC Matchplay Championship in Austin, Texas on Sunday (27th March).

"It's tough, I mean you're playing against seven guys. You're not really playing against the field so you don't have to worry about the other, so many other guys you're playing against that week. But you're playing against a guy that's across the tee from you so you have to know when and when not to go for things, when someone makes a mistake, be able to aim it 20 foot from the pin and be able to hole that putt. It's all in momentum - momentum switches pretty quick in this kind of game and this format. Today against Rory McIlroy, all I wanted to do was if I didn't hit it as good as him, not to worry about it. I was just going to frustrate him with my short game. If I missed the green, get up and down. If I hit it to 20 feet or 30 feet - hole the putt. That was my main goal and we ended up going down to the 18th but we had a really, really good match and I think by the end of this week we're all pretty tired so we just try to get it in and I played wonderfully this afternoon."

"It's easy to say that I'm very comfortable right now. It's not, it's never easy winning, it's very, very difficult. It may look good sometimes, it may look ugly sometimes but it's very difficult to win. One thing that I need to focus on is that I can't get too complacent with how I'm playing. I need to focus on those little things that make me great and really just go into Augusta and prep the exact same way that I've always had in the past and really try and focus on hitting it and executing the shots when I get there and hopefully the rest takes care of itself."
