Heroic Afghanistan topple Windies

Monday, March 28 2016 by SNTV
  • Unintimidated by former champions the West Indies, Afghanistan won their first ever World T20 Super Group match on Sunday (27th March) by 6 runs, despite being already knocked out.

Afghanistan had won hearts but not matches in their first appearance in the Super 10s at the 2016 World T20. But everything changed in their final game against former champions the West Indies, when they beat the Group 1 table toppers by 6 runs, in a stunning and gutsy display.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy opted to bowl first for the fourth time in a row and Afghanistan's top order crumbled against Samuel Badree on a turning wicket. The legspinner took 3-14 and limited Afghanistan's innings to 123-7: Nabil Zadran their key man, with an unbeaten 48 off 40 balls.

The West Indies rested Chris Gayle and saw 24-year-old debut opener Evin Lewis dismissed by Amir Hamza for no runs.

The Windies batting crumpled, with the last three wickets falling for just 16 runs. Their total: 117-8.

Seeking 10 runs off the final four deliveries, they lost Carlos Brathwaite's wicket to this stunning catch from man of the match Zadran.

The vanquished West Indies nevertheless topped their group with superior net run-rate to England: both teams finished on six points with one defeat and three victories.

The Afghan team head home heroes.
