Watson ready for cricket's 'ulitmate challenge'

Sunday, March 27 2016 by SNTV
  • Shane Watson, having announced his retirement at the end of the ICC WT20, spoke on Friday (25th March) ahead of Australia's knock-out match against hosts India in Mohali on Sunday (27th March).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Shane Watson, Australia, (on the match against India)

"So it is the ulitmate challenge to play India in any format here in India. The team is set up for these type of conditions, whether it is with the bat or with the ball as well. They have got world class spinners, they always have. So look if we can beat India on Indian soil, at any stage, in any format, it is an incredible achievement and everyone within Australian team knows that. I certainly know that, from plenty of experiences here, so it is going to be a great challenge and we're certainly going to be up for it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Shane Watson, Australia, (on mental approach being more critical than skills in a pressure game)

"In big games it comes down to your mental approach more than anything else, your skills don't change and the biggest challenge mentally is to be able to hold your nerve when the pressure comes on, which is certainly going to happen in a knockout game. India, there is quite a lot of expectation, there is quite a lot of people who follow the game here compared to back home in Australia, so there is little bit of expectation on the Indian team compared to the Australian team, but both teams want to win. It is such a big tournament for everyone, for all the international sides, especially in a knockout game, it really comes down to how well you can hold your nerve. And the good thing is recently with the one-day World Cup, we certainly did that at home. But we also know that India did that very well at home in 2011 as well and they've got quite a few of the similar players, so it's going to be a great game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Shane Watson, Australia (on the possibility of this being his last match)

"And even from my personal perspective to be able to have the opportunity to being involved in what could be, hopefully not, but what could be my last game this is as, I suppose, as a big a dream as you could imagine. Playing India at home in Indian home soil, it's certainly going to be huge game, I'm going to be really excited for it."
