Oosthuizen overcomes prize drought to triumph in Perth

  • South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen retains his lead to win the Perth International at Lake Karrinyup in Australia on Sunday (28 February) - his first title in two years.

We started the final day of the Perth International with 2010 British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen three shots ahead of the pack - Peter Uihlein and Romain Wattel his nearest competitors.

Despite a strong start to the day with shots like this eagle putt on the 3rd, Wattel's bogies outnumbered his birdies, and the Frenchman's par round left him in 6th place.

The steady pace of Uihlein's own final round - this bunker shot on the 15th setting him up for birdie - was not enough to see the American to the podium. His 71 tied him in 4th, with another Frenchman Gregory Bourdy who stormed 11 places up the table carding a 66 on the final day.

But Bourdy was not even the tournament's highest placed Frenchman. That honour went to Alexander Levy - a double bogie on the 6th the only blemish in an elegant round that matched his compatriot's 66.

Though the gap to the summit was closed, and briefly eradicated by Australia's Jason Scrivener, who finished in third with his best ever European Tour result , the title went to the South African who started the day in pole position: even with a three-putt bogie on the final hole, Oosthuizen had done enough to collect his Perth International trophy after a steady 71. The win returns him to 4th in the all-time list of South African golf champions. Here's what he had to say about it:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Louis Oosthuizen, South Africa:

"It means a lot. It's been two years since I had a win last. I came close a few times last year. So, you know, you want to stay in the winning circle and you want to keep that feeling of what it feels like."
