Record-breaking McCullum unaware of achievement

Sunday, February 21 2016 by SNTV
  • New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum hit the fastest century in Test history, from just 54 balls, in his last international match as the home side put on a display of power-hitting on Saturday (20th October) on the first day of the second Test against Australia at McCullum's home ground: the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

SOUNDBITE: Brendon McCullum (English): (Q: When did you feel like it was your lucky day today?):

"Probably second ball when I sort of had an almighty filthy slog and it sort of managed to go over the slips cordon for four. I guess when you are confronted with wickets like that and you know you are going to have to be pretty aggressive, you need some luck along the way as well. I think we got quite a bit of luck today, I think partnership bertween Corey (Anderson) and I was, well, great fun but it was also instrumental in, hopefully, setting the Test match up for us."

SOUNDBITE: Brendon McCullum (English): (Q: How did you feel at the end of day one?):

"A very, very good day for us in the end. You know, after losing the toss, anything could have happened and the wicket had plenty in it all day. We sort of decided that the best form of defence was for us to try and attack. It's not always going to come off but, I guess, today (Saturday) we got a little bit of luck along the way. As we sit here at the end of day one, we're firmly in the Test match."

SOUNDBITE: Brendon McCullum (English): (On breaking the record for the fastest-ever Test match century):

"I had no idea. As you probably saw, I was trying to hit every ball for four or six! No, I was not aware of the record but I was obviously very respectful of all those that have been there before - but it will nice to win the Test match, that's the most important thing."

    SOUNDBITE: Brendon McCullum (English):

"We'll see what the situation in the game is. Ideally, if we bowl well in the morning, we'll take a decent lead into the second innings. Then we can start to dictate play a little bit, But there's a long way to go in the Test match. We can sit here at the end of day one, after losing a really crucial toss, and say, 'We're in the Test match' and that's a good effort. I was really pleased with all the guys that batted and it's not easy to go out there and play that free-spirited style of cricket - but I thought boys like BJ Watling and Corey Anderson, and even the tail as well, they really bought into that too. It was a good day for us but there's a long way to go in the Test."
