Smith praises McCullum and sets objective for second Test

  • Australian captain Steve Smith spoke on Friday (19th February) as his side prepared to face New Zealand in the second Test.

The Aussies secured an innings and 52-run victory over the Black Caps in the first Test.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"No real surprises. He has been a terrific leader for New Zealand. I guess any captain wants to change the way their team plays for the better. He's certainly done that for New Zealand and he's going to be missed by the New Zealand cricket team."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"For me, it's just about making sure our batters adapt to the conditions. We know what we're likely to face. We knew that before we came over here. For us it's about making sure we sum up the conditions quickly. I guess get through those tough periods. Things obviously get easier when you're out there for longer and getting though those initial periods is really important for our batters. I thought Usman Khawaja and (Adam) Voges did that really well last Test match. Hopefully a few of the other guys can step up and do that in this game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain:

"I think both are big motivations. We want to be number one in the world in every format of the game. If we win this week, we'll be number one in two of those formats. For us we do want to win away from home as well. That's massive and on my agenda and the guys agenda and I thought we played really well in the first Test match to adapt to the conditions and I think that it is going to be important for us moving forward that we do that a lot."
