McCullum: "Pretty disappointed all round"

Tuesday, February 16 2016 by SNTV
  • Australia needed only a session and a half on Monday (15 February) to complete victory over New Zealand by an innings and 52 runs in the first cricket test which was built on a double century by Adam Voges to gave them a 1-0 lead in the two-test series.

SOUNDBITE (English) Brendon McCullum, New Zealand captain

"Yeah. Pretty disappointed all round I think. Australia were excellent - all the way through - right from the moment they won the toss. It supported the conditions. It's one thing to win the toss in seamer friendly but it's another thing to execute as well as they did. I thought they were outstanding and from lunchtime on the first day they were trying to play catch up. We were just never able to do it. And we were completely outplayed."

"Being 5-50 on the first morning - when you are presented with conditions like that - you know that you need a little bit of luck. I thought, in the end, 180 wasn't too bad. But the wicket dried out just a little bit quicker than what we were hoping for. In hindsight, if we were able to bat just a little bit longer. If we could've got 250 even - 300 ideal but 250 then we would've been in the game. I think we saw today that the ball was starting to turn quite a lot. And there was some reverse swing due to the abrasive nature of the surface as well. If we had have been able to eek out some more runs in the first innings then I think we would've been in the game a lot more than what we were."
