Steve Smith named Australia T20 captain

Thursday, February 11 2016 by SNTV
  • Australia have named their squad for next month's World Twenty20 tournament in India, with Steve Smith taking over the captaincy from the injured Aaron Finch and Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill preferred to Matthew Wade behind the stumps.

SOUNDBITE (English) Rod Marsh, Australian Cricket Chairman of Selectors:

"I don't think any were contentious. I don't think that's a correct word. A lot were difficult but we came with what we thought was the best team to have a crack at winning the T20 World Cup."

SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Smith, Australian Cricket Captain:

"It (T20 captaincy) was a little bit of a surprise. I've always been supportive of Aaron (Finch) as the T20 captain. It wasn't until a couple of days ago that Rodney (Marsh) came up to me and after they had a little meeting they said that I'd be the captain of the T20 side. So, that had to be ratified by the board and it was and you know, I'm really looking forward to taking over the side."

SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Smith, Australian Cricket Captain:

"The (T20) World Cup is going to be a big challenge for us. That's one of the trophies that's eluded this side. We're going to be playing in different conditions where we haven't had a lot of success. So, it's going to be a tough tour but I'm really looking forward to it."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australian Cricket Captain

"Yeah, I think he's (Matthew Wade) disappointed. He's obviously been the short form keeper for a little while now since Brad's (Haddin) retired. So, I think he's a little bit disappointed but the selectors have made a decision to go with Peter Nevill. I think it's really important that we have our best gloveman on call in India, it's a tough place to keep particularly if you're getting wickets that are spinning which is quite possible at the back end of the tournament , so I think the selectors have done a good job."
