  • Alexander Kristoff  beat Mark Cavendish in a sprint finish to win the second stage of the Tour of Qatar in Doha, but the latter retained the overall leader's gold jersey.

The beaches of Doha for stage 2 of the Tour of Qatar - a 135-kilometre race....

And with strong winds splitting the field, two riders Gatis Smukulis and Preben van Hecke saw the opportunity to break away as the stage snaked up and down the Doha coastline.

But stage one winner and 2013 champion Mark Cavendish and his Dimension Data team-mates began to increase the pace at the front of the peloton, and reel them in.

Cavendish and the sprinters came to the front to take control of the race, but there was a big crash on the final run to the finish line. It unseating several key contenders such as Andrea Guardini and Graeme Brown.

Luckily for Cavendish he avoided the crash but he now had to contend with Alexander Kristoff as they continued their sprint to the line.

Cavendish came from behind, but Kristoff of Team Katusha proved too strong for the Briton in the end, holding his lead and winning time of three hours, 11 minutes and 26 seconds. He closes to within five seconds of the overall lead.

That's still held by Cavendish, who remains in the gold jersey, but with the next stage an 11-kilometre individual time trial, he's unlikely to hold on to it....
