  • Fed Cup World Group Round 1 concludes around the world on Sunday (7th February) as Switzerland, Czech Republic, France and the Netherlands progress to the semi-finals.

The Fed Cup semi-finals were decided on Sunday (7th February) when three World Group ties poised at 1-all were resolved.

Belinda Bencic won all the points available to her to lead Switzerland to victory over Germany. The Swiss go through to their first semi-final in 18 years after breaking the 2-all singles deadlock with a 6-3, 6-2 victory from doubles partnership Bencic and outstanding veteran Martina Hingis.

They will face the Czech Republic, the defending champions, who beat hosts Romania 3-2 to advance.

Karolina Pliskova won both her singles rubbers - against Simona Halep on the Saturday (6th February) and Monica Niculescu on day 2 - and when world no9 Petra Kvitova lost both of hers, it was down to Pliskova and partner Barbora Strycova to win the doubles, which they duly did 6-2, 6-3.

In the other half of the draw, three-time champions France advanced with a 4-1 win over Italy in Marseille. Kristina Mladenovic recovered from her loss to lower-ranked Camila Giorgi on day one to beat Italy's Sara Errani 2-0. And Caroline Garcia concluded matters 6-3, 6-4 against Giorgi. They'll face the Netherlands in the next round.

The semi-finals will take place on the 16th and 17th of April in Switzerland and France.
