USA dominate Poland in Fed Cup

Monday, February 08 2016 by SNTV
  • The USA took a 2-0 lead over Poland on the opening day of their Fed Cup World Group II first round tie in Hawaii on Saturday (6th February).

The USA met Poland in a Fed Cup first round tie on Saturday. With neither Serena Williams nor Agnieszka Radwanska taking part in the tournament there was a chance for others to take centre stage for their countries.

In the first match of the tie Sloane Stephens faced Magda Linette. And it was the American who made the better start - taking the opening set 6-2.

Linette recovered and won four straight games in the second set, but it wasn't enough as Stephens came back with a vengeance. The American won six straight games to wrap up the opening match 6-2, 6-4.

Next up on court was Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and Paula Kania.

The second match of the tie was a much tighter affair with both players struggling to hold serve. Williams' quality eventually told and she won the first set 7-5 after an unsuccessful challenge from Kania.

Williams was struggling with injury throughout the match, but she was aided by a number of errors from Kania.

The American broke the Pole to take the second set 6-2 to follow in Stephens footsteps and record a straight sets win.

Williams will now play Linette with Stephens taking on Kania on Sunday.
