'Enormous' three points for Newcastle

Sunday, February 07 2016 by SNTV
  • Coaches' reactions after Newcastle United defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at St. James' Park on Saturday (6th February) to move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve McClaren, Newcastle United head coach:

"I think it'll feel better tomorrow. It's more relief because the last ten minutes you always worry when it's one-nil. They said at half-time we need second goal, and when it doesn't come you always worry. But we created enough, it shouldn't have been close in the last ten minutes - it was, we kept our nerve and held on, and I think we deserved the three points."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve McClaren, Newcastle United head coach:

"I think the three points are enormous. We said if we win today we'll get out of the bottom three, which is important. But you have to gather the points. We've got a tough one at Chelsea, we knew that, so this was a big game to win. We know that from Chelsea onwards we've got 18 days and we'll have injuries coming back from that. I mean this was a patched-up team, especially the defence. And we know... and I'm hoping and I believe that we will get stronger as the season comes to an end. Our squad will get stronger and better when we get people fit, defenders back... we will get fitter. But I think the heroes today were the likes of Stevie Taylor, Cheick Tiote and Rolando Aarons, who we threw in really and probably not ready, but through cramp and everything got through ninety minutes."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Tony Pulis, West Bromwich Albion head coach:

"Yeah, I've been at the club for just over a year now and that's probably the most disappointing away performance that we've had. The best way of describing it is that we were in a boxing match and we shadow-boxed for ninety-odd minutes. We never got close to them. When we had the ball our passing was poor - and we've got some good footballers in the team. And Newcastle were just better all over the pitch."
