Martinez hails 'mature' Everton

  • Reaction from managers Mark Hughes and Roberto Martinez after Stoke City slumped to a 3-0 defeat at home to Everton in the English Premier League on Saturday (6th February).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roberto Martinez, Everton FC manager:

"I think we have showed in the last three games that we have a different, mature side to our play. We were able to manage the game, we were able to defend well when we had to. Even today, in the second half, we created probably four clear-cut opportunities which - if you want to be critical - we should have taken, and you have to highlight the performance of Stoke's goalkeeper (Jack) Butland - I thought he controlled three or four big moments. But overall, to keep a clean sheet, to come to the Britannia Stadium and get that score line - and more than that, there is the controlling performance that we had - is very pleasing, and it shows how far we have come this season and how hungry the group is to finish the season really, really srongly."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Hughes, Stoke City manager:

"At times it looked from our point of view like a bit of a struggle for us defensively. But on a positive (note) - and there weren't too many today, to be perfectly honest - the one positive we'll take out is when (new signing) Giannelli Imbula came on. Throughout the game he wanted to get on the ball and his passing was accurate. I don't think he misplaced a pass in the whole 90 minutes, and he was able to finish the game as well, so that will push him on. From our point of view it's always difficult, you're chasing the game (3-0 at half-time), and certainly as a home team there's an onus on you. Sometimes you just have to accept it's not going to be your day, but when you're at home there's an onus - and rightly so. Your fans want you to try and get back into the game, and when you do that there's always that risk that you are going to leave yourself exposed going the other way."
