  • Australian Open Champion Angelique Kerber defeats Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets to level the Fed Cup World Cup first round tie between Germany and Switzerland at 1-1, in Leipzig on Saturday (February 6).

Germany welcomed Switzerland to Leipzig on Saturday for their World Group, first round Fed Cup match.

The pressure was on Aussie open Champion Angelique Kerber in her match against Timea Bacsinszky, atfer her compatriot Andrea Petkovic lost to Belinda Bencic.

Kerber raced to a 5-0 lead, showing no signs of fatigue after her exploits in Melbourne the week previously.

That winning form continued here - she served out the first set in just 31 minutes to the delight of the home fans.

The players exchanged breaks at the start of the second set before Kerber edged ahead - a deep return forcing Bacsinszky into a backhand error.

But serving to stay in the match, the Swiss saved three match points with some big hitting, but an untimely double fault on the fourth handed the momentum back to Kerber.
