Lobato clinches dramatic Dubai Tour stage win

  • Spain's Juan Jose Lobato won stage three of the UCI Dubai Tour on Friday in dramatic fashion, while second-placed Giacomo Nizzolo claimed the overall lead.

Day three of the Dubai Tour got underway with Team Sky's Elia Viviani the overnight leader,

The riders were facing a challenging 172km stage through the Dubai landscape

Viviani faced a battle through the city's streets as the real action began, with the road starting to climb towards Hatta Dam, with just under 15 km remaining.

Astana's Dimitry Gruzdev made a break for the lead, but his attack was swiftly extinguished by a series of riders bidding for the stage win.

A late puncture cost Dimension Data's British rider, Mark Cavendish, valuable seconds - and all but ending his hopes of victory.

Laurens de Vreese and Ben Swift upped the pace,

Philippe Gilbert then led a late BMC team charge only to fade and see Movistar's Juan Jose Lobato power past him to nail a spectacular win - and second place in the overall standings

Close behind was Segafredo's Giacomo Nizzolo, snatching the overall leader's blue jersey from Team Sky's Viviani.

BMC's Silvan Dillier took third spot from Fabian Cancellara.

Saturday's fourth and final stage is a 132 km ride through Dubai City before ending at the iconic Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest building.
