McIlroy struggles as Cabrera-Bello leads in Dubai

  • Spain's Rafa Cabrera-Bello holds a one-shot lead at 10-under following round two of the Dubai Desert Classic on Friday (5th February).

Bright blue skies welcomed golfers for round two of the Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy opened with a four-under par 68 on Thursday and was looking to improve on that form but struggled early.

The former world number one had hit five bogeys after 11 holes leaving and at risk of missing the cut.

But he clawed his way back with four birdies in his final six holes to ensure he remains at four-under par going into the weekend.

Nevertheless he'll face an uphill battle to catch the leaders.

Henrik Stenson's short game was on point for much of the day, and helped him reach seven-under par by the end of his round.

Danny Willett on the other hand produced a bogey-free round that included seven birdies.

His excellent performance combined with his score of 70 from round one left the Englishman just a shot off the lead at nine-under.

Top spot is occupied by Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello.

Six birdies helped him match his opening score of five-under meaning he leads by the slimmest of margins going into what will likely be an exicting weekend of golf.
