Fast start crucial in ODI series - De Villiers

Wednesday, February 03 2016 by SNTV
  • South Africa captain AB de Villiers looks ahead to the one-day international (ODI) series against England, on the eve of the opening match at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on Wednesday (2nd February).

SOUNDBITE: AB de Villiers (English) (on ODI series versus England):

"We're playing at home so there's obviously a bit of added pressure on us. We beat India in the last series which was a massive win. We've got momentum on our side when it comes to that. We haven't played England for a long time. They seem to be playing really good cricket so we'll be wary of them in this series so, hopefully, we'll get on top of them tomorrow (Wednesday) and use our home advantage to win this series."

SOUNDBITE: AB de Villiers (English) (on the workloads of bowlers Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada):

"Someone like Kagiso (Rabada) is really important to manage well. I have always said that in press conferences. He's a very young guy, playing in all three formats and bowling a lot of overs. So, hopefully, there will be an opportunity in this series to give both of them a rest somewhere along the line. We've got a lot of injuries around. Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and guys on the sidelines. Kyle Abbot now also with a niggle. So, lots of injuries and that is definitely something to look at. We can't afford any more injuries. Looking at Karisa and Morne specifically, we'll look to rest them somewhere along the line in this series. We'll try to find the right timing for that."

SOUNDBITE: AB de Villiers (English) (on his future plans):

"There are some other areas thta I'll look at to rest a little bit. But I'm very committed, at the moment, to be captaining the two formats - and to play T20s as well. We've got a World Cup coming up and I'm just taking it one game at a time, at the moment!
