Olympic wrestlers 'scared' of Zika in Brazil

Monday, February 01 2016 by SNTV
  • USA wrestlers, Adeline Gray and Alyssa Lampe spoke about the Zika virus outbreak during a wrestling test event in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2016 Olympics on Sunday (31 January) amid concerns of widespread virus outbreak.

"You know, I really wanted to tan when I came here and my coach has banned us from the pool so, unfortunately, we are not spending too much time outside. But, we are wearing long sleeves, long pants and just making sure that we have on as much bug spray as we can possibly intoxicate."

"Uh… you know, there's always something, you know? There's always like MERS over here, swine flu over there, there's always something you can catch, you can get sick from and, sure, that fear is always there. But I think that anxiety has to kind of step aside so you can focus on what you are doing. If you are worried about that, it kind of goes to the back of your mind and you not do your job well enough."

"We're just… We are in a bug spray, I guess. I have not been really outside the hotel so, I think that's really helping. But… uh… It's kind of scary but, there's nothing really you can do like, if you get a bite… (Q: How fearful are you?) Uh… I just try to not think about it. I am sure if I really thought about the consequences, you know, it would bother me. But I am just trying to focus on wrestling."
