Djokovic beats Murray to Aussie Open title

  • Novak Djokovic condemned Andy Murray to a fifth Australian Open defeat as the world number one won his sixth title with a 6-1 7-5 7-6 (7-3) victory at Melbourne Park on Sunday (31 January).

    Andy Murray faced Novak Djokovic in the men's Australian Open final on Sunday. The Brit has never won this Slam despite having played in five finals here.

    On the other hand Djokovic was chasing his sixth title down under, and the Serb got off to a slightly wobbly start as Murray threatened to break him in the first game.

    However, Djokovic saved break point and then went on to gain a break of his own. With Murray gifting the Serb his opening service game.

    And from here Djokovic clicked into gear and dominated the first set - demolishing Murray's serve to take the opening set 6-1.

    Murray livened up a bit in the second which gave the watching crowd some great tennis such as this rally. Murray showing his true qualities.

    However, the Brit wasn't able to subdue Djokovic for long and the world number one eventually took the second set 7-5.

    Murray took the third set to a tiebreak but a double fault at 3-1 down left Djokovic with a clear sight of victory.

    And the Serb hammered home his advantage and took the championship with an ace.

    The world number one never looked like losing his crown and completed the straight sets win over Murray to claim his sixth Australian Open crown.

    Djokovic's 11th Grand Slam win pulled him level with Roy Emerson's record of six wins in Melbourne.
