History man: Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares secure doubles final win

  • Jamie Murray became the first Briton to win the Australian Open men's doubles title in 82 years, as he and Bruno Soares beat Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek 2-6 6-4 7-5.

    Having reached the Wimbledon and US Open finals with John Peers in 2015, Jamie Murray teamed up with Bruno Soares in an attempt to go one better.

    Standing between them and silverware glory were opponents Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek boasting 10 doubles Grand Slam titles between them.

    But in the second set it was Murray and Soares who began to exert pressure and soon levelled the match.

    With the momentum shifting, the Scot then found himself serving for the match at 5-4 before being broken.

    But the pair immediately broke back before Brazilian Soares comfortably held on to his serve to complete a three set victory

    It was the first major men's doubles title in either players' career

    Britain will be hoping brother Andy can repeat the success against Novak Djokovic in Sunday's mens singles final.
