SHOCK! Kerber overcomes Williams

Sunday, January 31 2016 by SNTV
  • Angelique Kerber shocked Serena Williams in three sets to win Australian Open title on Saturday (30 January).

Angelique Kerber was certainly the underdog heading into the Australian Open final on Saturday, with Serena Williams the overwhelming favourite.

However, Kerber made a strong start to the match and was more than a match for Williams, playing some lovely tennis of her own.

The German looked confident at took the opening set 6-4.

This was a wakeup call for Williams who found her groove in the second set and served it out 6-3 to force a third set.

Many expected Williams to push on, however, the momentum swung back to Kerber who broke the American in the second game of the set.

Williams broke back but surrendered her serve once again to give Kerber the advantage.

And the 7th seed did not look back and broke Williams to claim her first Grand Slam title.

Kerber's win means that Williams missed the chance to level Steffi Graf's open-era record of 22 titles.
