Rio mayor: Zika virus 'not a problem' for Olympics

Friday, January 29 2016 by SNTV
  • Rio mayor Eduardo Paes and IOC president Thomas Bach talk about the impact of the Zika virus on the 2016 Olympic Games.

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Eduardo Paes, Rio de Janeiro Mayor:

"I don't think that this Zika situation is a problem for the Olympics. The month where the Olympics will take place, August, is a month where you don't have proliferation of the mosquito. I would say it's much more easy. This is our problem, a problem of Brazil, a problem of Rio, a challenge that we must face. We have been facing it for years, without success. That's the issue. To be very honest, the least of my concerns regarding Zika and Dengue are the Olympics."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Thomas Bach, IOC president (on outbreak of mosquito-borne Zika virus in Brazil)

"The virus issue, there we are in close contact with the World Health Organisation as well as the organizing committee and the Brazilian authorities. You may know that President Rousef has called, for a summit, there is a South American summit in this respect and now the health ministers of the region, are meeting to address this issue."
