Jones: "The biggest risk is to not take a risk"

Tuesday, January 26 2016 by SNTV
  • England head coach Eddie Jones named hooker Dylan Hartley as his new captain

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dylan Hartley, England captain (Q: When and how did you find out you'd be England captain and what did Eddie say?)

"Me and Eddie had a chat a few weeks ago, nothing was confirmed, he just told me to get playing rugby and playing well and get in the team and last night I got a call to come down for a meeting, I was a bit nervous, he asked me if I wanted to do the job, put his hand out and I think I might have snapped his hand off and didn't let go. So last night I didn't really sleep last night, so excited by it and proud, like I said."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eddie Jones, England head coach (Q: Is there a risk in this appointment?)

"Well the biggest risk is to not take a risk. Now we need to change English rugby and we need to get back, as I've spoken about before, we need to get back what the rest of the world fears about England and that's their forward play. I was telling a few of the players today, when I was coaching Australia against England, if we could get parity in the scrum and in the maul we knew that we could win the game. Now we need to get back that English style of play, that strong, strong scrum, driving maul, uncompromising cleanout."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eddie Jones, England head coach (Q: What will Dylan Hartley bring that Chris Robshaw didn't?)

"Well let's get one thing right it's not about what Chris Robshaw didn't do. I had a meeting with the team today and I said Chris has done a fantastic job for England over the last four years, but we just decided to take a new direction. It's about taking a new direction. So it's been a difficult time for Chris and he's still an important part of the team and I know he is going to support Dylan really well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dylan Hartley, England captain (Q: Has Chris Robshaw had a word with you?)

"He didn't have a word with me, he offered me his hand, shook it and said congratulations and he said if there is anything you need I am here for you, and that is testament to the bloke. He is a great guy and that's why as a captain I followed him. So he is one of the guys that I can turn to if I need help."
