Fowler wins in Abu Dhabi

  • Rickie Fowler holds off late challenge from Thomas Pieters to win his second European Tour title at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship

It proved to be a long and eventful final day, with 60 players back early to complete round three, before a dramatic final round got underway at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

World number one Jordan Speith felt he'd not been quite on top of his game this week, but still produced a 68 on Sunday for 11-under-par, and a top-five finish.

Henrik Stenson was not fully fit, still recovering from a knee operation last month, but the Swede had a terrific final round of 67 to finish at 14-under-par, tied in third place with Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy saved his best for the back nine, hitting birdies at 10, 12, 13 and from off the green here at 16.

He completed his round with an eagle for a 68, but it wasn't to be enough.

The Belgian, Thomas Pieters, went one better with a final round of 67.

He so nearly produced an eagle at the 18th, which would have put him level on 16-under par with the winner, Rickie Fowler.

Fowler began with birdies at the first and second before a double-bogey at the seventh dropped him off the top of the leaderboard but that wasn't to last long as he produced a stunning response, sinking this eagle from the bunker at the 8th.

Back in the lead, he held his nerve, adding this birdie at the 17th to give himself some breathing space.

A par here at the 18th was enough to seal the win, Fowler winning the tournament by one shot for his fourth worldwide victory in nine months.
