South Africa captain: England bowlers have 'lost pace'

  • Defeated South Africa captain AB de Villiers picks out England's weaknesses ahead of the final test match of this series at Centurion.

If England needed any motivation for the final test of this series, South Africa's captain have given it to them.

SOUNDBITE (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain:

    (on the England team)

"The batting is not 100 per cent 'best in the world' material, there are definitely a couple of areas where we can expose them, if we have a good start with the ball in hand, be nice and solid, build up the 'dot balls', (have) a bit of patience, I believe we can find a few cracks in the batting line-up. The bowling is very experienced, but some of the guys have lost some pace over the years."
One of those bowlers to have perhaps lost some pace is Stuart Broad, who took 6 for 17 in the last match...

SOUNDBITE (English) Alistair Cook, England captain:

"I think we were very ruthless in that last game, we sniffed an opportunity and we piled through it as a team obviously lead brilliantly by Stuart (Broad). But even the way we knocked off the runs, apart from the last four or five of them, was pretty ruthless as well. So we have shown signs of that, we've proven that even in the Ashes as well when we got opportunities in our favour we piled through. So, even if it doesn't happen in this game, when this series has been up for grabs we have been very ruthless. But absolutely, we've got lots to play for, just as much personally as well."

A personal goal Cook to achieve here is to become the first English batsmen to reach 10,000 test runs. 117 at Centurion would do that.
