Porteous triumphs at Joburg Open

Monday, January 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Haydn Porteous won the Joburg Open at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club by two shots over fellow South African Zander Lombard on Sunday (17 January), his maiden victory on the European Tour.

Three players held a joint lead heading into the final round of the Joburg Open on Sunday - with qualification for the Open Championship also at stake.

Zander Lombard was one of the overnight leaders, however, the 20-year-old finished Sunday 16-under par leaving him out of contention for the title, although he did grab a spot at the Open.

And joining Lombard at the Open will be Anthony Wall, who also fell off the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

This left Hayden Porteous as the last of the overnight leaders still in contention for the title - and he put himself on the verge of victory with his 2nd shot at the 18th.

So four days of competition came down to this shot. Porteous held his nerve and he birdied the 18th to secure his first win on the European tour - winning in Johannesburg by two shots. The South African will also be off to the Open Championship in Scotland in July.
