Broad propells England to victory in Johannesburg

Monday, January 18 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction after a devastating spell of five wickets for one run in 36 balls from Stuart Broad propelled England to victory in the third Test against South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday (16 January) and in the process Alastair Cook's tourists an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with one match to play.

SOUNDBITE (English) Alastair Cook, England captain: (Question: How do you feel right now?)

"Yeah, to be honest it hasn't really sunk in yet. Coming to the ground today, I didn't think we'd be doing interviews like this. Brilliant, really proud of the guys, the way we've gone about the business on tour. It's been a tough tour - it's always tough to come to South Africa and to play the number one side in the world. But we've played some really good cricket, some fantastic cricket, and the guys, as I say, can be very proud of the effort, and obviously the support staff as well."

SOUNDBITE (English) Stuart Broad, England fast bowler: (Question: How do you feel about your performance today?)

"Yeah, I mean, to win in South Africa is on the bucket list, really, as a cricketer. I mean, I've never beaten them in a Test series prior to now. They're a very tough team to play against, so to have come over to South Africa and play the sort of cricket we have, it's...Everyone's contributed in the series so far, and I had a good feeling about this ground before the game, actually. It feels a very special ground to play at. I wasn't feeling overly well on the first day but I said to the lads that I'd try and make it "up to you second dig. So it was nice to get a few wickets in the second innings. But we got a bit of luck as well as a team, it was the perfect day to bowl, really - a bit of cloud, the lights were on, it (the ball) swung, it seamed, and there was a bit of bounce. But I think the bowlers were due (some luck) after Cape Town."

SOUNDBITE (English) Alastair Cook, England captain: (Question: What's it like in the slips when Stuart Broad is producing a display like that?)

"I think it's seven times now he's got five (out) in one spell, so yeah, as I say it just clicked for him and I think he smelt blood today, I really did. He thought that this was the time to strike, and full credit to him, absolute full credit. As I say, it's a privilege to captain him and Jimmy (Taylor). The way the time after time they perform for England and backed up by Finney (Steven Finn) and Stokesy (Ben Stokes).
