England 'hammered' us - De Villiers

Sunday, January 17 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction from South Africa captain AB de Villiers after his side were beaten by seven wickets in the third Test against England in Johannesburg on Saturday (16th January) and as a result lost the series.

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain (on the spirit in the dressing room and the pressure applied by England)

"The message in the changing room all the time was to keep fighting and there's no doubt in my mind that all eleven kept fighting right to the end, but we just got a good hammering from the opposition. There is no other way of putting it. They kept applying the pressure. Every time we looked like we were starting a good partnership, there was a good catch or a good delivery and it just kept going like that. I guess when you've got the momentum on your side, things tend to happen that way and once again, like I said just now, credit has to go to them for creating that kind of pressure."

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain (on the England bowling unit and how well they bowled)

"No, that's some of the best bowling I've faced, from the whole unit. Look, obviously the conditions suited them (England) really well they made full use of that, but they asked a lot of questions right throughout our innings, they didn't ask as many questions in our first innings and I thought that was where we missed a trick, but this time around they were spot on, a little bit fuller in their lengths and asked... just asked questions all the time and the ball was moving around a lot, but they showed some good skill and you've got to give them credit for that, especially Broady (Stuart Broad) obviously, getting the results, but I thought as a unit they bowled pretty well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain (on the strength of the South African team)

"We're not the same side any more. Lots of different players, but yeah, I don't know. It's a difficult question to answer. We are still up there in the rankings and all that, but that means absolutely nothing. I believe our form of late has been pretty poor and it will take something special to turn it around. It's important for us to keep fighting and to keep trying to find that mould of cricket we're trying to play, but we're a little bit off-beat at the moment, that's for sure."
