Olympics boss insists Rio will be 'magic' despite budget cuts

  • IOC Executive Director Christophe Dubi puts up a robust defence of Rio 2016 budget cuts ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games.

SOUNDBITE (English) Christophe Dubi, IOC Executive Director:

"We've seen cuts in the budgets in the past, including the very successful London games, where they had to find also savings towards the end. They had to find savings. That was quite a significant amount of money, but here again, what has been done is really good, no? The result that we have today is heading in the right direction. They have found efficiencies and I wouldn't talk about cuts, because really that is not the case. You'll see that in the experience. Four journalists, and we discussed with our media committee in December, about all the measures that were proposed. From transportation to printing, every single detail they will look into, and on-one at that point in time in the stakeholders is saying that the experience will be affected. On the contrary. Rio will be magic.

"We are in that time frame where you have a million details. And you have a schedule which is extremely precise. So what bothers me, or keeps me awake at night, is to ensure that each and every deadline, and we have millions of them - merely exaggerating - are respected. That is what we are facing. We are at crunch time. No decision can be delayed a day."
