Reaction from day one of the EurAsia Cup

Saturday, January 16 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction after the first day of the EurAsia Cup on Friday (15th January) with Darren Clarke's Europe leading Jeev Milkha Singh's Asia 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 after the six fourball matches in Kuala Lumpur.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Darren Clarke, Team Europe Captain (on the first day of play at the EurAsia Cup)

"I think we'll take a three-point lead after day one. The guys all played very, very well. Ben An, in terms of the Asian team, played a wonderful back nine. I think he was six-under for the eight holes he played himself with his own ball on the back nine. It's hard to battle with that, but all in all satisfied with the way the guys played."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Jeev Milkha Singh, Team Asia Captain (on the first day of play at the EurAsia Cup)

"I'm still happy the way my team played. There is still a lot of golf left. Foursomes tomorrow, singles the day after. The matches were very close, except two matches. The boys played really well. I think the shortfall was in the putting and the team realise that. They hit the ball really well. I think that is the nature of the game, of you hole putts, you win. That's what happened out there today. They hit some good putts that didn't go in and they worked on their putting and they are looking forward to the next two days."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Shane Lowry, Team Europe (on their difficult win over Wu Ashun and Shingo Katayama)

"Yeah, it was, myself and Andy (Sullivan). You know, I don't think either of us birdied the same hole, which is nice. Sully played great, putted great, kept us on top all day. They came back at us on 15 and 16, but I said to Sully on 17, 'The ball is still in our court. We are two up with two to play'. If we made two pars on those two holes I think we were pretty safe. So, yeah, it was hard fought but at the end of the day it was nice to get a win."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Thongchai Jaidee (on his comeback win With Byeong-hun An over Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick)

"For me and Ben we were thinking we have to do something on the back nine, because on the front nine we lost two down. We got to do something, I told Ben we have a couple of things to do. Finally he got in form on the back nine. He played well on the back nine. I'm concerned my game to make him more confident to play. Anyway, we made one point for Asia. I'm very happy with that. Happy to play with Ben, yeah"
