Dusseldorf to host Tour de France

Friday, January 15 2016 by SNTV
  • Tour de France organisers announce that the 2017 Tour de France will begin in Dusseldorf, Germany.

SOUNDBITE: (French) Christian Prudhomme, Tour de France director:

"Dusseldorf, the little Paris. We are very happy and very proud. 'Wir sind Froh, wir sind stolz' (We are happy, we are proud: German). For the first time since thirty years Le Grand Depart will take place in Germany."

"In the past years we witnessed a revival of German cyclists. In the past five years the country that has won the most stages is Germany. They have won 24 stages of Tour de France in the past five years. Six in the last edition, seven the year before and six again the year before that. And with a preference for the opening stage."

"I have gave you the choice Thomas asking whether you prefer an individual time trial or a team time trial. Even though we never opened the Tour with a team time trial. I suspect that behind your decision to organise an individual time trial you were thinking that the three time world champion of the time trial Tony Martin, that came second in Utrecht last year, could do a beautiful yellow shirt (German: "We shall see")."
