Smith looks ahead to India series

Tuesday, January 12 2016 by SNTV
  • Steve Smith spoke in Perth ahead of Australia's first of five one-day internationals against India.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain (on playing first two games at WACA and Gabba, Brisbane)

"I think it suits us. The WACA and Gabba have sort of been a fortress for us in one day and test cricket for a while and obviously it is a bit different to what the Indians are used to back home, so hopefully I guess we can exploit that early."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Captain, Australia (on the team's ODI strategy)

"For us, we have played some pretty good one day cricket off late. So you know we like to try and leave ourselves as many wickets we can in the shed, going into the back end of the game. Then try and make a lot in the last little bit, I think traditionally at the WACA and at the Gabba you can score a lot of runs at the back end if you got wickets in the shed, so sometimes here you can get a little bit longer to get into your innings, work the ball around and you can make it up in the back end. So hopefully we can continue to do that well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australian captain (on new players in the Indian team)

"I actually haven't watched any practice matches to be fair. But i know some of the young guys through IPL. They are going to get an opportunity, the likes of Manish Pandey has progressed really well, played some good cricket off late and obviously the experience of Kohli and Rahane and Rohit Sharma in the top to middle order, they are pretty crucial wickets for us. And hopefully we can get them early."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Smith, Australia captain (on team's performance this summer)

"I think every game we have played this summer has been a big test for us. I was really impressed with the way we played in the Test matches. To win both series 2-0 was very satisfying, but it's a different team, this one-day team. It's a young team, we have lost a lot of players from the World Cup here last summer and hence we are trying to re-develop and stay at number one in the world. We have got some guys who are very capable and hopefully you can see us play well in the whole series."
