Caroline Garcia (FRA) beat Daria Gavrilova (AUS) to level the score at 1-1 in the Hopman Cup.

Australia beat France in the mixed doubles to win the round robin match 2-1 at the Hopman Cup on Friday (8th January)

The Nick Kyrgios show continued on Friday as the Australian took to the court for the first Hopman Cup match between Australia and France.

He was up against Kenny De Schepper and looked to be on top from the outset as he broke the Frenchman in the fifth game on his way to sealing the first set 6-4.

Despite his best efforts, De Schepper could do little against the home favourite in the second set.

The 20-year-old Australian breaking his opponent in the ninth game, enough to secure a 6-4 6-4 victory and give Australia a 1-0 lead in the process.

In the day's second game, Caroline Garcia of France took to the court against Daria Gavrilova.

The Australian had the chance to establish an unassailable 2-0 lead with a win but went a set down with Garcia won a hard fought first set 6-4.

The second set echoed the first with Gavrilova and Garcia matching each other all the way to a tiebreak.

The Aussie had a chance to push the match to a decisive third but put her forehand long and Garcia took full advantage coming back to win the tiebreak and the match 6-4 7-6.

With the match tied at 1-1, the winner would be decided by the mixed doubles encounter.

Kyrgios and Gavrilova secured the first break of the match and the Australian pair then served out the set with a powerful ace by the 20-year-old.

However, the French pair of De Schepper and Garcia refused to throw in the towel and fired back in the second set.

They dominated the set, winning it 6-2 and ensuring the match would go down to the wire.

With both teams having match points saved, Kyrgios took over, first from the baseline and then at the net to seal an incredible point worthy of winning the encounter.

Australia will now face the Ukraine in the final of the Hopman Cup on Saturday.

While the Ukraine have never lifted the trophy before, Australia have not won since 1999 despite hosting the competition.
