Ukraine end Hewitt's Hopman Cup hopes

  • Alexandr Dolgopolov beat Lleyton Hewitt in three sets to give Ukraine a round robin win over Australia Gold on Thursday.

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina is aiming to be in the World top ten by the end of this year and they way she's started this season it would be hard to bet against her.

The 21-year-old had won her previous two Hopman Cup singles matches before this one against Australia Gold's Jarmila Wolfe.

She took the first set in 34 minutes to take it 6-3 and took a minute less to take the second set by the same score.

That meant Lleyton Hewitt had to beat Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets to keep Australia Gold in the tournament.

That looked possible too when Hewitt took the first set 6-4.

The Perth crowd were loving it too when he broke early in the next but the Ukrainian hit back to take the set 6-3.

So Hewitt's chances of a first Hopman Cup title were gone and Dolgopolov won the decider 6-4.

Ukraine still in the hunt to win this tournament for the first time in 28 years.
