Germany beat France in Hopman Cup

Thursday, January 07 2016 by SNTV
  • Germany claimed its first win at the Hopman Cup after Sabine Lisicki and Alexander Zverev defeated Caroline Garcia and Kenny De Schepper in the decisive mixed doubles match.

They may have been representing their countries France and Germany in this Hopman Cup opener, but Caroline Garcia and Sabine Lisicki looked as though they were part of the same team, nice matching outfits girls!

The two are hard to separate on the court too, with powerful attacking styles and a similar world ranking. But it was Garcia who came out on top in this one. Racing her way to a first set win. The second was a tighter affair, but Garcia edged the tiebreak to give France a 1-0 lead.

But it didn't last for long - in the men's singles German teenager Alexander Zverev ensured the tie would go the distance. He beat Kenny De Schepper - a man 10 year his senior.

The match was over in under an hour. It was an aggressive approach from the young gun, as he leveled the scores at 1-1.

That meant it all came down to the final mixed doubles tie.

Lisicki and Zverev combined, and their mix of youth and experience worked perfectly as the took the first set in 30 minutes.

But perhaps the young man should remember to bring some spare equipment with him, after losing his racquet's shock absorber in the second, he had to rely on De Schepper to lend him one.

Play resumed and Lisicki had the chance to serve out the match but after double faulting, and the French won the tiebreak.

That took it into a match tiebreak and Lisicki made amends. This delightful drop shot securing the Germans first win in this year's Hopman Cup.
