Reaction to Chris Gayle's controversial interview

Wednesday, January 06 2016 by SNTV
  • Renegades Chief Executive Stuart Coventry and James Sutherland, Cricket Australia Chief Executive spoke on Tuesday (5th January) following Chris Gayle's controversial comments he made towards a female reporter on Monday (4th January).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Coventry, Renegades Chief Executive:

"Obviously Chris has made some comments and as part of that, regrets some of the comments that were made. On behalf of the franchise (Renegades) we want to apologize to Mel and hope that she didn't feel uncomfortable in her professional environment. She is a wonderful sports reporter and she doesn't deserve that at the time. And we have had a number of chats with Chris and also with Cricket Australia early this morning to try and clear up the matter. And we have strong values at the Renegades and one thing we'll do in the coming days is look for some type of internal sanction for Chris for the comments he did made so that he won't do that sort of things again."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stuart Coventry, Renegades Chief Executive:

"It could be a cultural thing but it is unacceptable here in Australia and we don't condone that sort of behavior. So we will do everything we possibly can to stop that. We have ticked so many boxes this year as a franchise. You know, delivered that fantastic WBBL, great result last night and this is a speed hump in the road but hopefully you know we can get over this."

SOUNDBITE: (English) James Sutherland, Cricket Australia Chief Executive:

"I think it's a pretty significant mis-hit by Chris Gayle. Those comments are completely out of line and inappropriate ad something that we don't in any way condone and there's no place in cricket, the Big Bash League, for those sorts of comments. I think that you know the circumstances last night was, was live television and I don't think anyone should be put it in the sort of position that Mel McLaughlin was put in and it's not a nightclub, and I think one of the things that hasn't dawned on everyone is that it's actually a workplace, it's Chris Gayle's workplace, it's also Mel McLaughlin's workplace and those sorts of comments border on harassment and are again completely inappropriate, inappropriate in cricket, inappropriate in the workplace."

SOUNDBITE: (English) James Sutherland, Cricket Australia Chief Executive:

"I'm not ruling out sanctions. We obviously need to work through and take advice from relevant people as to what the right approach is going to be."

SOUNDBITE: (English) James Sutherland, Cricket Australia Chief Executive:

"What will be the case is that certainly Chris and hopefully everyone within the cricket community knows and understands what our position is on this and why we think it's entirely inappropriate."
