Group B action on Monday (4th January): the second day of the Hopman Cup, the mixed team tournament held annually in Perth.

Great Britain's partnership of Andy Murray and Heather Watson beat France Kenny De Schepper and Caroline Garcia 2-1.

Murray's match was a formality as the world no2 dispatched the world no148 in 58 minutes 6-2, 6-2.

After a slow start Watson performed well against Garcia, who is ranked 21 places above her in the world. The Frenchwoman served for the match in the second, but Watson broke back. She was eventually defeated 6-3,5-7,6-3.

The deciding doubles game went to a champions tiebreak, which Great Britain claimed for the win. Final score 6-2, 5-7, 10-6.

France return to play Germany on Wednesday; GB will meet Australia Green (one of two home teams in the tournament).

Elsewhere Ukraine won their tie against the US after Serena Williams pulled out. Her replacement Vicky Duval was beaten 6-4, 6-1 in the opener by Elina Svitolina, before Alexandr Dolgopolov saw off Jack Sock 6-4, 6-2. Duval and Sock won a consolation doubles point in the final rubber, 6-2, 6-3. And Serena Williams should be fit to face Australia Gold in their next match.
