Victoria Azarenka on Monday (4th January) set up a second round showdown with Simona Halep at the Brisbane International, following a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Russian qualifier Elena Vesnina.
Foot and thigh injuries have interrupted the past two seasons of former world number one Victoria Azarenka, who won the Brisbane International tournament back in 2009.
The Belarusian was back in action on Monday for the first time since retiring from the Wuhan, China WTA event in September.
Russian qualifier Elena Vesnina took the first two games at Pat Rafter Arena, but was then swept aside 6-2, 6-0 in 87 minutes.
Azarenka will now take on top seed Simona Halep in an enticing second round encounter.
