Stokes' luck was in - Elgar

  • David Elgar of South Africa on Ben Stokes' 258 as England racked up a declared total of 629-6 in a morale-crushing day for South Africa in the second test on Sunday (3 January) in Cape Town.

"If you look at Ben Stokes, he seems to be one of those cricketers that uses his arm quite a lot. It is the way that he plays his game. But massive credit to him today - it came off. I think this morning he came back quite positive and aggressive and it could have gone to hand and you could be sitting there writing a different story there tomorrow morning. But it's one of those things where it is on your side or it isn't and it was one his side and unfortunately we copped quite a heavy first innings by then. You ride your luck when it is there."

"Whatever our captain asked for - the bowlers put their hands up and threw it at them. We had various different game plans against the guys to try and get them out. But it's one of those days where you just have to take your cap off and say to them 'well done, you won the battle.' I can't fault our bowlers at all with regards to what they did there today. It was just one of those days of cricket that hopefully don't (won't) get repeated against us."
