World Sailing expecting 'vast improvements' in Rio water quality

Wednesday, December 16 2015 by SNTV
  • Questions remain over water quality for the sailing events at the Rio Olympics despite assurances from federation in London, England on Tuesday (15 December).

SOUNDBITE: (English) Malcolm Page, World Sailing spokesman:

"With this pipe belt being completed very soon, we hope to see vast improvements in the water quality in the Marina da Gloria. I think the athletes do their utmost they can to protect themselves because I, and I am sure they don't, want that to be a reason to not perform at their best."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Malcolm Page, World Sailing spokesman:

"They have committed to us that it will be done by this month. It will be a nice Christmas present for us. And we look forward to getting our people out there to check it out in January."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Malcolm Page, World Sailing spokesman:

"To think that we only came away with about an eight per cent sickness rate, I think was a really good sign of what everyone is doing. And sure maybe a lot of that has come from that a lot of these athletes and coaches - it's maybe their fifth trip to Rio across the last previous two years. So they are getting smart as they go along as well. I think it's the whole combining of information and aligning with each other. We shouldn't just be silos - we should be sharing. It's something that we are doing really well with the other watersports as well. So what we have learnt, is what we are sharing, and vice versa."
