'We believed' - Amla reacts after South Africa lose again

  • South Africa captain Hashim Amla reflects on his side's 337-run defeat in the final test match against India.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Hashim Amla, South Africa captain:

"At lunchtime what were we, three down? Definitely we believed that we could still take it. We knew the last hour the last session is going to be a bit more difficult. Obviously even if you lose one or two more wickets it's always going to be difficult after number eight, nine, ten, eleven to hang in there. We tried our best, AB de Villiers did an exceptional job to try and hold the game together for us and unfortunately we couldn't get as deep as we wanted to."

"Yeah absolutely 480, I don't think if I asked who of you guys thought that we would probably have got 480 if we tried to, I don't think many guys would put their hands up. It's a pretty big, daunting target, especially if you weight it up with five sessions to bat. I think having come close to that before in the past I think we kind of felt that was the best way to save the game for us. It would have been easy for our batters, or for us to say, you know what let's just go out and have some fun and get some runs under our belts with the guys in catching positions, but that gains nothing, especially when you are playing for team and you're playing for your country and trying to save a Test match. So if the target had been a bit lower, certainly we would have tried to at least get a victory under our belt at the end of the series."
