Chris Cairns cleared of perjury charges

  • Former New Zealand cricket captain Chris Cairns is found not guilty of all charges against him after a nine-week trial.

    Former New Zealand cricket captain Chris Cairns arriving at Southwark Crown Court this morning, shortly after he would hear the "not guilty" verdict in the trial against him.

    He was accused of perjury and perverting the course of justice after the retired cricketer successfully sued Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi for accusing him of match fixing.

    The all-rounder was also accused of perverted the course of justice by inducing fellow cricketer Lou Vincent to provide a false witness statement during a Skype call.

    Cairns' friend and "legal adviser", Andrew Fitch-Holland, was also accused of perverting the course of justice and was also cleared of the charges today.

    The trial lasted nine weeks and despite the successful defence, Cairns said afterwards that his reputation was "completely scorched" and there was no longer a future for him in cricket.
