  • Great Britain won the Davis Cup on Sunday (29th November), after Andy Murray beat David Goffin in straight sets in the first of reverse singles to complete a 3-1 win over hosts Belgium in Brussels.

Not since Fred Perry won a deciding rubber at Wimbledon in 1936 have Great Britain held the Davis Cup.

Yet with the Murray brothers winning the doubles on Saturday, it was one rubber from glory for the visiting side in Belgium.

Murray junior faced World No.16 David Goffin. The World No.2 breaking to lead 4-2 in the first.

The Belgian has shot up the rankings from outside the top 100 last summer, and Murray had to be at his best to consolidate the break.

It was advantage Britain as Murray took the opening set. Goffin, though, was far more fluid in the second.

However, the two-time Grand Slam champion here at set point produced a stunning forehand on the run to move into a commanding position.

And when Murray broke to lead 4-3 in the third, it looked as if the seventy-nine year wait was over.

Murray held serve to set up two match points on the Belgian's serve.

He lost the first, before producing a shot worthy of such a moment.

With the win Murray made it 11 straight wins in the Davis Cup this campaign.

Quite a triumph from Leon Smith & co after they were playing third tier Davis Cup tennis just five years ago.
