Matt Jones escapes threat from Spieth and Scott

  • Home contender Matt Jones claimed a one-shot victory at the Australian Open in Sydney on Sunday

The final round of the Australian Open and overnight leader Matt Jones must have thought he'd woken up in the middle of a nightmare

Jones led by three shots at the start but blew the competition right open with a bogey at the first, a double bogey at the second, and this triple (bogey) at the ninth.

Adam Scott continued his third-round momentum on Sunday, setting up a birdie here at the seventh before finishing tied with Jones at seven-under.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth also put the pressure on, this birdie on eleven helping him to six-under and a share of the lead

But Jones dug in, saving his par with this chip in from the bunker at the twelfth.

Birdies on fourteen and sixteen restored his advantage

It was a clean run to the last hole - two-over 73 for the day, but enough to win the 2015 Australian Open title by a shot.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Matt Jones, 2015 Australian Open champion:

"I've watched the Australian Open many years growing up out here. Watching (Greg) Norman, I especially remember Norman because he was my idol growing up. Just have my name on that trophy with Norman, there's (Lee) Westwood, there's (Greg) Chalmers, there's (Aaron) Baddely a couple of times, (Stuart) Appleby, (Adam) Scott, it's something I'll never forget."

The victory earns Jones a place in next July's Open Championship
