Nine-man Liege win at Zulte

  • Nine-man Standard Liege snatched a dramatic 3-2 win at Zulte Waregem in the Belgian Pro League on Friday (27 November).

Standard Liege were lying in 13th at the start of play on Friday night as they travelled north-west to face Zulte Waregem.

Standard were given a real gift when Zulte goalkeeper, Abdou Diallo turned the ball into his own net.

Zulte came into this as the team in-form, being five points off the top.

However yet more comedy came from Diallo as Jorge Teixeira made it two before teh 15 minute mark.

Standard had only taken four points from seven away games in the current campaign, and they showed their vulnerability early in the second half.

Juventus loanee, Mame Thiam, beat the Standard offside trap - with his sixth strike of the season.

Events really looked to be going Zulte's way when the Standard captain kicked the ball away.

Having already been cautioned, referee Serge Gumienny produced a red and sent off Trebel.

Zulte pressed for an equaliser against ten men, but were caught on the break twelve minutes from time.

Renaud Emond picked up the loose ball and ran at the Zulte defence before setting up Mathieu Dossevi.

There was still more drama to come.

Standard were reduced to nine men in the 86th minute when Reginal Goreux reacted badly to a challenge and pushed the referee.

Calamity moments continued between the posts as it was Bryan Verboom's turn for Standard.

2-3 it finished as Standard move up to ninth; Zulte remain fifth.
