Jones four shots ahead of Spieth at Australian Open

  • Matthew Jones leads the Australian Open by three shots after a second round 68 on Friday (27th November).

Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott and Lee Westwood are all present at the Australian Open in Sydney, but it was a 17-year-old amateur that produced the shot of the day.

Australian Ryan Ruffels' tee shot at the par-three second looked set to find the cup but eventually stopped just a couple of inches short.

Elsewhere in the second round, defending champion Spieth was looking to make up some ground following an opening round of 71.

And the world number one did just that as he holed birdies on the first, 14th and 18th to end the day with a 68, leaving him four shots back at three-under.

It proved to be a different story for both Lee Westwood and Adam Scott.

The Englishman shot a one-over 72 and sits at even par heading into the weekend, while the Australian struggled with the putter throughout the day and ended with a two-over par 73.

Despite the numerous big names, Sydney local Matthew Jones now leads the way.

The 35-year-old followed his opening round of 67 with a 68 on Friday, which sees him sitting top of the leaderboard at seven-under par.

Jones can now look forward to the weekend with a three shot lead over second place Todd Sinnot.
