Wenger: 'UEFA's rule for doping means they accept it'

Tuesday, November 24 2015 by SNTV
  • Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Monday (23rd November) that he is unhappy with UEFA's doping rules - and threw his support behind beleaguered Real Madrid head coach Rafa Benitez.

SOUNDBITE (Englis.h) Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager: (On Dinamo Zagreb's results standing despite having used a player that has now been banned for doping):

"It's a surprising rule. UEFA applies the rule that is planned, but I personally don't agree with the rule. You cannot say 'OK they had a player that was doping and the result stands'. That means you basically accept doping. It is the rule and we accept that and we have to look at ourselves and deal with our own performance."

SOUNDBITE (English) Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager: (On his comments about doping in football):

"I don't know if I would have the support of anybody, but I came out on that and as a result we had the doping control from UEFA on Friday (20th November).

    Q: It all went ok?

I think so, we had 10 people on Friday to control us."

SOUNDBITE (English) Per Mertesacker, Arsenal defender: (On how much the players want to remain in the Champions League after the group stage):

"We want to remain in that competition for sure and obviously it has been a difficult competition for us due to our results, due to our performances. There's still a chance for us and we want to take it seriously from now on, especially at home. We beat one of the best teams in Europe at home (Bayern Munich), so let's put that in our mind and let's get that confidence and show a good performance."
