Rio de Janeiro's new Olympic Golf Course was handed over to the 2016 Organising Committee on Sunday (22 November).
SOUNDBITE (English) Eduardo Paes, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro:(On the legacy of the golf course)
"In Brazil, I don't think there's much of a legacy for a golf course, I have always said that. I don't think this is something that Brazil is very famous for - delivering golf courses. It's not a popular sport in Brazil, as Canoe Slalom is not. But there are some things that you need to do when you deliver the Olympics. Some sports that are not popular in the country that you need to build venues (for). So I hope we can get the most of it. The Brazilian Golf Confederation will take care of it. It's going to be a golf course used by players, by golf players, but in the contract we signed with them we are asking them, we are telling them, it's going to be their obligation to try to bring kids here, make social projects here, so that we can have the best use we can get for this golf course. But I think it's going to be much more of a touristic asset, bringing people to Rio to play in the first Olympic Golf Course."
SOUNDBITE (English) Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Rio 2016 Organising Committee Chairman:(On the legacy of golf course)
"It's a big legacy. It's a public golf course, it's a lot of younger boys and girls that they (Brazilian Golf Confederation)want to participate to develop golf. And this is a chance in a new region of the world for golf to be developed. I think that all sports that did this before, they succeeded. And now, with golf, I have no doubt will do the same."
